Sometimes you just have too much stuff to take it along inside the car; and with everyone downsizing, cars are getting smaller. Sure, there’s always the popular roof rack, but not everyone is tall enough or strong enough to load and unload a roof rack. Garage door clearance may prohibit the use of a roof rack, too. And sometimes you need to carry around some things that you don’t want to put inside the car. For example: gas cans (empty or full), freshly killed game, a used lawnmower, a muddy dirtbike, you get the idea. Instead of trading in your car for a pickup, consider a cargo carrier. It simply slips into your standard receiver hitch, and will hold many hundreds of pounds, far more than you could reasonably put on the roof.

Cargo carriers are available in different styles and with different missions. The simplest style is a simple steel rack. This is handy, but may preclude the use of the rear door, tailgate or hatch when loaded. You may want to consider a carrier that swings away to allow access. Cargo Carriers are notorious knee-knockers when installed, so many models will fold up vertically to keep them out of the way when they’re not in use carrying cargo.

If your cargo carrier comes without tail lights, you may want to add a set if your cargo is large enough to obscure your vehicle tail lights. These lights simply plug into your trailer connector next to the hitch.
