You’ll need to choose your carefully. The most important consideration is the weight of the trailer you’ll be towing, followed closely by the GTW (Gross Towing Weight) of your tow vehicle. Be certain that every single component – receiver, ball mount, and ball – on your vehicle is rated to tow the biggest trailer you’ll ever tow. (Don’t forget that odds are, eventually someone is going to ask you to tow their trailer, not yours. Their big, heavy trailer.) Rating the ball mount and ball to match the maximum towing capacity of your vehicle, not the weight of the trailer you want to tow today.

Choose a ball mount that will make your trailer as level as possible when the hitch is coupled. You may need a mount with some drop or rise, depending on the trailer and tow vehicle’s relative heights. Don’t forget to account for the tow vehicle squatting when it takes the weight of the trailer on the hitch.

Remember to keep the ball mount as short as feasible, because the further the ball is behind the rear axle, the more the trailer will steer the tow vehicle on a windy day. Also, the further back the ball is, the more the tongue weight of the trailer will push down your rear suspension.
